Healthy aging in India: evidence from a panel study

Purpose Recent public health policy emphasizes the achievement of healthy aging as average life expectancy increases worldwide. Evidence for from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) is limited. The purpose this paper to assess prospects its associated factors in Indian context. Design/methodology/approach study was based on a national-level panel survey, Human Development Survey (IHDS) conducted 2004-05 2011-12. analytical sample consists 10,218 elderly individuals who were 60 years old above at baseline. Change status assessed disability disease incidence follow-up. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) model performed change. Findings Increasing age risk factor all dimensions outcomes. Elderly lowest wealth quintiles more likely lose due short-term morbidity, whereas highest long-term multi-morbidity, indicating evidence presence “disease affluence”. Social capital, such living joint family acted protective against risks. Originality/value With results showing affluence” poverty” different outcomes, there should be focus that copes with undergoing epidemiological transition. It also important pay attention health-protecting social familial support achieve aging.
